Drugstore Beetle
Biology
The drugstore beetle is found worldwide. This species of beetle gets it’s name for its preference to feed on pharmaceuticals. It is reddish brown in color and ranges between 2-3.5mm long. The drugstore beetle also has long grooves running the length of it’s body.
The female can lay up to 75 eggs at once and hatch within a few days. It is the larvae that are responsible for the damage that this species can cause. The lifespan of the drugstore beetle is normally around 7 months.
Feeding Preferences
The drugstore beetle feeds on grains, flour, bread, rice, seeds, beans, pasta, cereals, bird seed, grass seed, potpourri, spices, teas, and tobacco.
Transmitted Diseases
The drugstore beetle does not transmit human diseases.
Habits
The drugstore beetle are known to be attracted to light, this could act as an invitation to gain access to your structure. Once inside, they will infest any dried foods stored within your structure. The adults can fly and can enter your structure through windows, ripped screens, and doors. Once they infest your food, they contaminate it through egg laying, urine, and feces.
