Indiana Bat

Biology

CLICK FOR BAT PROGRAM

The Indian Bat is found in many areas of the United States especially in the Midwest. The Indiana Bat is medium sized. It can range in color from brown, black, or gray. They are only 1 or 2 inches in length when full grown, and they weigh about ¼ of an ounce. They are the only species of bats to have pink lips. They are often mistaken for the Little Brown Bat so it’s their lips that is a feature that can be used to tell them apart. The  females can give birth to one offspring in the mid summer. These young are independent and are able to fly by the time they are 1 month old. The life span of the Indiana Bat is from 9 to 12 years.

Feeding Preferences

The Indiana Bat feeds on insects that are out at night. They are responsible for cutting the nocturnal insect population down.

Transmitted Diseases

A main concern is the diseases that can be spread by bats. The two major concerns are the lung disease histoplasmosis which can come from the bat guano, and the rabies virus, which comes from being bitten or scratched by an infected bat.

Facts On Rabies Being Transmitted By Bats:

One of the major concerns is that, bats can transmit rabies to humans. Though less than 1% of bats carry the rabies virus and transmit it. If a bat is weak, sick looking, and found during the day there is a good chance it could be carrying rabies.

Habits

The Indiana Bats form large colonies. They may not spread out in a large cave but huddle together in small section of it. Inside of the bat colonies, a separate colony will be created of pregnant females. They will care for their young in this area. Once their young are able to care for themselves they will leave that maternity area and rejoin the rest of the colony. In the winter months these bats may travel long distances to find caves where they will hibernate. Colonies of the Indian Bat will meet up with each other for hibernation. There can be thousands of them in one location. When the weather warms up then they will break down into smaller colonies again. Hibernation takes place in the state of Indiana, that is how they got their name.

Bat Exclusion and Control

Believe it or not but some bat species are protected. So where does this leave you as a homeowner? There are some laws to follow and Expert Pest is here to help.

Expert Pest Management will remove bats humanely and legally. Our trained professional will come to your house and look for all the holes the size of a golf ball or bigger where bats may enter. When an entry point is found, then a one way door is installed so that the bat can get out but it cannot get back in again.

As a homeowner you will probably be concerned about the bat droppings and bat bugs that are left behind. We also offer a clean up service where we disinfect the bat droppings and rid you of possible bat bugs with this service.

We provide a 3 year written warranty that covers all our work. It contains valuable information to help you from being a target for a bat residence.
